Reflection in Nursing - 2981 Words

Introduction This essay will demonstrate my reflective abilities within an episode of care in which I have been involved with during my practice placement. It will discuss several issues binding nursing practice with issues of ethics and the model of reflection which provided me with a good structure and which I found most appropriate, is Gibbs model (Gibbs 1988). This particular model incorporates - description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and the action plan. I have examined my own values and beliefs to the individual receiving care and have integrated and explored theory related to this in order to discuss and debate these values which underpin professional practice. I have chosen to reflect on my observation of the†¦show more content†¦I recognised the uncomfortable emotions now being triggered. I thought that as Mohammed was of the Islamic faith that maybe there were specific rituals that may need to be undertaken by his family – but I was not sure of these. Whist observing the attempt by staff to resuscitate Mohammed, I hadn’t any feelings of fear, but of sadness. I was saddened by the fact that he had saved his money to come to the UK to see his family whom he had not seen in ten years and saddened that he would not see them again due to unpredictable circumstances. I felt sad that Mohammed had died with no family present and annoyed about the comment I had heard from the nurse who was wishing that the family would not take long in seeing their father as she had to clean the room. I felt uncomfortable that the Senior Nurse had asked me to wash the body without even knowing if I had previously washed a client as she knew that this was my first Adult placement and surprised that I was not spoken to/supported after the traumatic experience I had witnessed. Evaluation In assessing the incident, I feel that there were a few things which could have been dealt with differently and some aspects which demonstrated good practice.
